Nerve, directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (they directed the Catfish documentary together) spins the typical digital force taking over human fate trope. The film stars Emma Roberts, Dave Franco, Juliette Lewis, and Miles Heizer. It begins with a good girl, teased about how she needs to do a little more living. She succumbs to peer pressure and gives in to playing a game called Nerve, in which participants are dared to do just about anything online. The dare is then livestreamed for everyone to watch. Roberts and Franco’s characters team up, when watchers steal their identities and turn their lives into an ongoing life-threatening game. They’re ultimately put in a situation where they have to turn on each other.
The film is written by author of American Horror Story, Jessica Sharzer and hits theaters July 27th.
